S is for... Something
It's Sunday. I was feeling tender. I started this a few hours ago, wrote a couple of sentences and then called a time-out. Yesterday was Tracey and her brother's birthday night out. Enough said.
The 'flagship S'. Better make it a good one. Here goes.
Tell you what , if you want to think, dwell, contemplate, ponder, wonder about something...then try doing it on something.
Hang on a second.
I'm not certain you're following me properly.
It's my fault really for not explaining it clearly. I mean, something. Not some-thing. Something. Think about something.
This is going to get confusing, but also fun. It would appear we have discovered the vicious cycle...that's a bit of a neggy way of looking at it(that's negative for those of you that don't know - but why say negative when you can say neggy, because saying neggy is hilarious as well!). Let's just call it 'the cycle'.
If you've managed to think about something for a while, I believe I can now say, WE HAVE DISCOVERED THE CONSCIENCE! Welcome, to your conscience. Or is it my conscience? The conscience? Who owns this? Who is the person in charge around here? I demand to speak to the manager! Ah man, this is so confusing. Or is it?
Not sure exactly when I discovered mine properly. But for many years now I feel I've had a good relationship with myself. Apologies, I mean my self. Which is something slightly differently - obviously - there's a space.
Ultimately, I guess where this is going is, I believe it's all about perspective. Remembering I'm a pedant, something doesn't really cut it for me.
What doesn't cut it for you Chris? Tell us.
For fucks sake! SOMETHING, as in the fucking word!
OOOooooooh! Why didn't you just say so.
Anyway, something, as a word, it's too ambiguous, flaky, wishy-washy(by the way great fucking word wishy-washy). Why pick something, when you can be specific? I'll tell you why. Because as much as we are searching for the ideal, the perfect, the 'just right; we desperately need the ability sometimes, to just pick something. It doesn't need to be perfect. I mean perfection is nothing without imperfection anyway. But without perfection and imperfection, what have you got? Well...something, I guess! Besides, being so specific all the time can be a massive pain in the arse! Something will do. But it won't. Ahhh man!
SOMETIMES though, in fact I'd argue, all times you can actually make that something a specific. And I think where you can be, you should try to be specific. Actually, I'll go one better than that. In the words of the mighty Yoda, "No. Try not. Do or do not, there is no try.". Be specific. Get this as well, for a little bonus, if the specific you chose doesn't work, well you know, you could always change it to a different one? The trouble is finding all the different somethings to use.
Take the below for example.
When I started to think about this S is for entry, I instinctively thought of this. Those of you that don't know who this is, this is Colin Kaepernick. If you know me, you know I love Kap! I'm a 49ers fan, have been for years. My eldest brother is a 49ers fan. When I was a kid we used to have a massive plastic covered NFL book at home with loads of stuff in about all the teams. Again, those of you that know me can probably guess that I didn't read it, so much as just look at all the pictures! But how do you choose a team when you follow a sport in a different country? Tough one, those of us that do, we all have something that we use as a justification as to why we follow whoever we follow. A topic for another day.
Believe in something. Even it it means sacrificing everything. Just do it. Clearly the Nike offices are all about Master Yoda as well. But SPECIFICALLY what is this something? Well, Colin is an absolute boss. In recent years he has made a massive stand by taking a knee instead of standing during the American national anthem at American football games....I know, I know, kneeling to take a stand....errrr...today's post has been confusing enough. Moving on.
He did this to raise awareness of the "oppression of black people and people of color." His words, not mine. Well in fairness, Colin doesn't own those words. I don't think we've gone that crazy on the old copyright just yet. But clearly you can tell they're Colin's words and not mine because well, he spelt color wrong. ; )
Insert winky face to demonstrate my quality bants! But ultimately, that's what Colin is all about here. Addressing on a very big stage, racism. That is the something.
Specifically then, my something today is to say. Don't be a racist piece of shit!
Couple more things. Believe in something. Er, what? How about no? I mean, I can believe in something, as in its existence. But I don't necessarily want to believe in something, as in be an advocate for it.
But, 'something is better than nothing' Chris.
*Pendant alert*. No mate, no it fucking isn't. Not always. Sometimes, the something is not cool. Sometimes, you don't need the something. Sometimes, the nothing is just fine as it is. Why do you think The Beatles wrote Let It Be? Because, leave it alone you absolute turd!
Yes, I think it is important to believe in something. But not just anything.
How can nothing really be nothing anyway? You called it something. It's ok I'm going to step away from the keyboard now.
Who doesn't love a good quote?
"Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something."
