S is for... Skills

So, this is what it’s all about. Skills. Ok, it’s not all of what it’s all about. But it’s part of it, and it’s a fundamental part. Skills as a basis is a pretty solid fundamental to work from. Skills pay the bills.

In essence, I started ‘S is for Something’ partly on the basis that I wanted a way to collate my coaching philosophy and knowledge. I’m a Level 3 Basketball England Coach. I got my qualification in 2015 thanks to Graham Herstell and Jeff Jones of the Manchester Giants.

As I continue to go through the ‘S is for Something’ series I’ll cover all the ‘S’s’ that I think are vital to being successful. Why S? Well I didn’t make the English language, but S seems to have the most words that I can use to cover what I consider to be some of the vital topics in order to achieve success. Seriously.

Back to basketball. I made a promise to myself that I would get this Level 3 qualification before I turned 30. In order to get this qualification you need to be coaching at a particular level. This is largely so you have an environment to put the skills and knowledge you are learning into practice. Living in the UK, let alone in Devon, makes these opportunities a little hard to come by.

But I had the opportunity to coach the University of Exeter Women’s Basketball Team. I took it, and come the end of the season got my qualification. To say that the season was difficult would be an understatement. But looking back there are still lots of positives I am able to take from it. A huge thank you to all the girls that were involved in that ball club. I hope they are still able to take something positive from the whole experience. Thanks to the all staff the Sports Park and Athletic Union also.

Skills, though. Strings to your bow. This is what it’s all about in my eyes. Can you do what you want to do? In any walk of life, in any field, in any profession? If not, how can you learn it? And then...what skills have you got that are then transferable; to different sectors, different environments, different roles? I’ve had over 20 different jobs. I’m 33. Do the maths. I left them all for various reasons obviously. But whatever I learnt in one I took with me to the next. Skills.

What have I done today? Used my skill of writing to hold your attention to the end of this post. You’ve used your skill of reading to get there.

I reckon together, for those that want to, we can help Great Britain push towards developing basketball across the nation and help produce a programme that can consistently compete for international titles. I genuinely believe it is a team effort that we can all be a part of. And the ballers amongst us want you to get on board. Please!
