S is for... Saturday
"SATUR-DAY!SATUR-DAY! SAAAA-TURDAY! SATUR-DAY!SATUR-DAY! SAAAA-TURDAY! SATUR-DAY! SATUR-DAY! SAAAA-TURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT!!" - Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John / Bernie Taupin
Saturday to me means... football. It means a bunch of other stuff too. But it's definitely meant football to me for a long time. Cue a bunch of potential readers giving up on this blog because they positively hate football - bit strong, arguably unnecessary (on mine and their part - but mostly theirs - because when I chat rubbish - I do it well.) Football haters I'd encourage you to keep reading it anyway, because I think I can turn you around. I'll cut to the chase, basically, it's down to your shitty attitude. Pow!
Moving on, the only other thing it really means to me is, Saturday Job. Not exactly sure when, let's say when I was 14, I started working Saturdays at my Step-Dad's shop in the centre of Exeter, Devon, England. It had once used to be called City Cards, then for a good few years was called The Card Zone.
I used to get £10 and a Beanie Baby for my troubles. Eventually I built up a collection of a shit load of Beanie Babies. They would sit in my room on a shelf. There's not a great deal you can do with a Beanie Baby. I never really played with them at that age. But what did become apparent to me was business. Those of you that know what a Beanie Baby is, know that at once upon a time they were worth mega bucks! Literally bucks, because the guy who invented them, Ty Warner is American. Ty Warner is a billionaire. I remember meeting him when I was a teenager, because we would go up to the NEC in Birmingham for trade shows from time to time. I don't really remember thinking anything in particular other than....this is cool.
Anyways, I eventually had had enough of my Beanie Babies and sold them, to my Step-Dad. I think he gave me about £2000 for them, because there were some sort after ones amongst the regular ones. What did I do with that money? WHO KNOWS?! Probably bought some absolute rubbish; CDs, Videos, DVDs, food, clothes, I have no idea. All I know is, I spent it.
Who doesn't love a good quote?
"If Sunday is the Lord's day, then Saturday belongs to the Devil. It is the only night of the week when he gives out Free passes to the Late show at the Too Much Fun Club." - Hunter S. Thompson
